Bryant was born in Baird, Texas, in 1920. He earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Texas A&amp;M University in 1942 and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1949. Before graduate school, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as a commissioned officer in radar and communications. In 1942, he attended radar school in the United Kingdom and served as an officer at a Royal Air Force radar station in England. Between 1943 and 1946, he was posted at a United States radar company in Italy, France, and Germany.
