IEEE began publishing its general  member's magazine, IEEE Sprectrum, in 1964, one year after the Institute came into existence from the merger of AIEE and IRE.    Only AIEE had had a general membeship magazine, Electrical Engineering. 'Spectrum  replaced it and went to all members of the merged institute. The first cover featured articles about a then new major technology, the laser.
