Background

As authorized by the IEEE Board of Directors, the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board (known as IEEE Regional Activities Board prior to 1 January 2008) approved the establishment and boundaries of the IEEE Kansai Section on 14 November 1998. The Kansai Section conducts activities which assist the local IEEE members to enhance their professional careers and their communities.

The number of members of the Kansai Section as of November 30, 1999 was 1472, which was slight increase compared with that of June 30, 1999. In 1999 the Section had five Executive Meetings, one Annual Section Meeting, one Committee meeting, two technical lectures, and one symposium in co-operation with other institutes. In 2000 Kansai Section had three Executive Meetings, one Annual Section Meeting, two Committee meetings, two technical lectures and two symposia in co-operation.

The number of members of the Kansai Section as of December 31, 2011 was 2316, which was large increase compared with that of December 31, 2010. In 2011 the Section had five Executive Meetings, one Annual Section Meeting, two Committee meetings, five technical lectures, and two symposiums in co-operation with other institutes.

In December 2000, Electron Devices Society Kansai Chapter was established.

In January 2001, Solid-State Circuits Society Kansai Chapter was established.

In July 2002, Circuits and Systems Society Kansai Chapter was established.

In December 2006, Antennas and Propagation Society Kansai Chapter, Communications Society Kansai Chapter, Computer Society Kansai Chapter and Microwave Theory and Techniques Society Kansai Chapter were established.

In April 2007, Photonics Society (knows as Lasers and Electro-Optics Society prior to 2008) Kansai Chapter was established.

In November 2007, Signal Processing Society Kansai Chapter was established.

In May 2009, Consumer Electronics Society Kansai Chapter was established.

In August 2011, Control Systems Society Kansai Chapter was established as the 11th Kansai chapter.

In June 2012, the Kansai Section Life Members Affinity Group is formed.

In January 2014, Nagoya Section, Hiroshima Section, Shikoku Section and Fukuoka Section are added to the Kansai Section Consumer Electronics Society Chapter to form the Kansai/Nagoya/Hiroshima/Shikoku/Fukuoka Joint Section Consumer Electronics Society Chapter.

In January 2014, the IEEE Kansai Section Women in Engineering Affinity Group is formed.
