On 4 May 1887 Emile Berliner applied for a patent in Washington, D.C. on a "Gramophone" with a cylindrical recording surface. On 26 September 1887 for a patent on a flat-disk record and player. The first model, introduced in 1888, used a flat disk, for which he devised mass-production techniques.
