Biography

Walter J. Karplus was born in Vienna, Austria on April 23rd, 1927. Karplus served in the U.S. Navy and earned degrees from Cornell University. Ithaca. N.Y.. USA, and the University of California. He was a faculty member at the University of California in Los Angeles. for 40 years. He was chair of the Computer Science Department from 1972 to 1979 and interim dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science in 2001.

One of Dr. Karplus' research interests was virtual reality. which he used to allow doctors to observe how blood flows in a brain aneurysm. He also used virtual audio at NASA's mission control room. He was the president of the IEEE Neural Networks Council from 1995 to 1996. Dr. Karplus published six books and over 130 technical papers and held four patents.

Karplus died on November 11th, 2001.
