As the Advocate, I would like to add a few comments to the Proposal.

The achievement of 14” TV-type LCD in 1988 revolutionized the LCD industry. Before, the industry, made of small number of participants such as Sharp and Seiko, had been serving pocket-calculator and word-processor industry supplying only small-size displays. Now recognizing that LCD would be able to supply large-size full-color full-motion displays to TV and PC industries and would soon replace CRT, giant companies such as IBM, Toshiba, Hitachi, and Panasonic joined the band wagon hence the LCD industry as we see today was established. .

Because of this accomplishment, the development received two awards:

1. The 1990 Edward Rhein Foundation Award The developed monitor is displayed in the DEUTSCHES MUSEUM in Munich, Germany. The panel on the side reads, “LL-1402 Liquid Crystal Colour TV Receiver The image on the 14-inch screen is produced by twisted liquid crystals, controlled by an active matrix. Each of the 640 pixels per scan line is made up of three coloured dots (red, green, and blue). The Edward Rhein Foundation awarded its 1990 technology prize to Sharp for this colour monitor.”

2. The 1992 IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award Citation, "For demonstrating technical feasibility of large size color LCD displays suitable for consumer TV applications."
