Meredith C. Gourdine

Biography

Meredith C. Gourdine was born on 26 September 1929, in Newark, NJ. He received B.S. in Engineering Physics from Cornell University in 1953 and Ph.D. in Engineering Physics from California Institute of Technology in 1960. His thesis was On Magnetohydrodynamic Flow over Solids. He was also a 1952 Helsinki Olympic silver medalist in the long jump.

Dr. Gourdine pioneered the research of electrogasdynamics and responsible for the engineering technique termed Incineraid for aiding in the removal of smoke from buildings. In addition, he is an inventor of Focus Flow Heat Sink, used for computer chip cooling. In 1991 Gourdine was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and in 1994 he was inducted to Engineering and Science Hall of Fame (Dayton, Ohio).

Meredith C. Gourdine died on 20 November 1998.
