Biography

Mario Roberto Schaffner was born in Florence, Italy, and came to the United States in the early 1960s. While at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, USA, he designed and built the first digital radar processor, which provided the processors and color displays essential to radar meteorology today.

Schaffner also worked with Harvard I Blue Hill Observatory, the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospherics Administration.

Schaffner died on September 10th, 2001.
