Kurt R. Stehling (1919-1997) was head of the launch vehicle division of project Vanguard at the Naval Research Laboratory and transferred with the program to NASA. In the early years of NASA, he was senior scientist on the staff of the NASA Administrator. In the mid 1960s, he was vice president of Electro-Optical Systems Corporation, and in 1971 he became a senior aerospace and technology advisor on undersea technology at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
