IEEE Spectrum

IEEE began publishing its general member's magazine, IEEE Spectrum, in 1964, one year after the Institute came into existence from the merger of AIEE and IRE. Only AIEE had had a general membership magazine, Electrical Engineering. Spectrum replaced it and went to all members of the merged institute. The first cover featured articles about a then new major technology, the laser. Spectrum from its beginning contained a mix of broad articles on relevant technologies, news of the profession, profiles of prominent members, and other items of wide interest.
