Anaheim, California. Beginning in 1943, Leo Fender, a radio repairman, and Doc Kaufman, a musician developed an inexpensive, mass producible electric guitar similar in basic design to earlier models that artists and engineers had been experimenting with since the early 1930s, but with better pickup and tone controls. Fender introduced the prototype for the Telecaster in 1951. Fender's guitar helped launch a revolution in music.
