Alexander Graham Bell

On 14 February 1876 Alexander Graham Bell filed for a patent on a device for the electrical transmission of speech (issued 7 March 1876). A few hours later that afternoon, Elisha Gray filed a patent caveat for a speaking telephone. All ensuing court battles were eventually resolved in Bell's favor.
