Arrigo Frisiani

Biography

Born: January 20th, 1936

Arrigo L. Frisiani was born on January 20th, 1936 in Genoa, Italy. He graduated cum laude from the University of Genoa in 1959 with a degree in electrical engineering, and received his MSE in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1962. In 1971 he received a doctorate for switching theory and electronic computers from the Italian Ministry of Education.

Beginning in 1963, Frisiani received an appointment of Professor of Electronic Computers at the College of Engineering at the University of Genoa. He was instrumental in the development of the computer science related aspects of the electrical engineering curriculum. In 1974 he became director of the Computing Center at the University of Genoa where he implemented remote batch and time sharing services.

From 1973-1979 Frisiani served as chair for the Scientific Council at the Laboratorio per le Tecnologie Didattiche, Consiglio Nazionale delle Richerche in Genoa, where he coordinated the research activities of the eight person staff in computer aided instruction and audiovisual devices. The Council's major accomplishment was the COMES system, developed jointly with the university's Computer Engineering Group, which was implemented under VM on IBM Systems.
