Abstract 

Profile of Ernst Weber, first president of the IEEE and president emeritus of Polytechnic University. For his pioneering research in electromagnetic fields, linear and nonlinear circuits, and microwave measurements, Weber was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Reagan in 1987. Throughout his life Weber worked to build bridges between different cultures: between European electrical engineeringand American electrical engineering, between industry and academia, between engineering and physics, and between the AlEE and the IRE.
