Biography
Norman F. Fyler (IRE, A'52, M'57) was born in Great Falls, Montana on July 3rd, 1921. He received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, in 1943, and did graduate work in electrical engineering at Stanford University.
He joined RCA in 1943, where he was engaged in the development of microwave tubes, image tubes, and video systems. In 1949 he joined Sarkes Tarzian, Inc., Hawthorne, NJ, as chief engineer. There he was chiefly involved in the design and production of cathode-ray tubes. In 1952 he became supervisor of the Advanced Development Laboratory of CBS Hytron Division, Danvers and Newburyport, MA, where he was responsible for the development of visual systems, including color television and solid state devices.
In 1958 he joined Litton Industries to become manager of the Display Devices Department of the Electron Tube Division in San Carlos, CA, where he was responsible for a wide range of electron tube and solid state display devices and systems. In November, 1963, he entered graduate school at Stanford University. At the same time, he became Staff Scientist of the Litton Industries Electron Tube Division Research Department.
My Fyler was a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Sigma Tau. He received the 1965 IEEE Vladimir K. Zworykin Award "For key contributions to the basic design of color television tubes."
