IЕЕE in Republic of Macedonia

First individual IEEE members in Macedonia exist from early 1970’s. In 1990 number of 10 IEEE members has been reached. After the splitting of SFRY and formation of the new IEEE Yugoslavia Section (1992) the IEEE members from Macedonia have started several activities in order to increase the member number in order to reach the critical number, defined by IEEE Bylaws, for Section formation. The initiative board was established. The active members of this board were: Goce L. Arsov, Lupco Karadzinov, Katerina Goseva, Vladimir Dimcev and Ljupco Trpezanovski. Its duty was to organize activities and to recruit new members in order to satisfy the IEEE Bylaws. Finally, in summer 1996 the limit of 50 members was exceeded and petition for IEEE Republic of Macedonia Section was prepared. In October 1996, Jordan Kolev, the chair of the very new Bulgaria Section invited IEEE representatives from Macedonia to meet in Sofia the R8 Director Peer Martin Larsen and the IEEE President Wallace Read (passed away in 2011) (Fig. 1). The two representatives have been invited to attend the Section Congress 1996 in Denver, USA. At the same time the petition for Section formation has been submitted to the IEEE RAB. This action had, also, great support from Raymond Findlay(1996 IEEE Vice President for Regional Activities and 2002 IEEE President). In January 1997 Republic of Macedonia and its IEEE members were visited by IEEE 1997 President, Charles “Chuck” Alexander (Fig. 2). The Republic of Macedonia Section has officially been approved on February 14th 1997 (Fig. 3). In September 1997 the 1996 IEEE President Wallace Read visited Republic of Macedonia Section. During his visit he received the highest Section Award for his support in Section formation (Fig. 4).

IЕЕE Republic of Macedonia Section

The IEEE Republic of Macedonia Section is located in Region 8 and was formed in 1997. The centre for most activities is around Skopje. While not represented with any IEEE Council, there is close co-operation between the other Balcan Sections and chapters. This year the IEEE Republic of Macedonia Section selebrates its 15th aniversary.

Section activities overview

In the past 15 years the section grew from 60 to more than 200 members. Many activities were performed and several conferences were co-organised or sponsored. The student branch is very active and atracts quite a number of student members. Good cooperation with neighbouring sections is established. One of the first chapters was the joint chapter SP01 with Bulgaria Section. After the critical number of members was riched on within the both section this chapter splitted in two separate chapters. In 2002 (21-22 September) Republic of Macedonia section organised the first Balcan Sections Meetings with participants from Bulgaria, Romania, Türkiye, Serbia and Macedonia (Fig. 5). The second meeting was organised in 2005 with participation of representatives from Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Macedonia and the Region 8 director Baldomir Zajc (Fig. 6 and Fig. 7). Among many lectures delivered by wellknown professors from allover the world (Fig.8) DL lectures were organized as well (Fig. 9). In 2007 the Section celebrated its 10th aniversary. Special guests were Baldomir Zajc (R8 past director), Jordan Kolev (from Bulgaria Section) and Vladimir Katic from Serbia and Montenegro Section (Fig. 10, Fig. 11).

Volunteers

Nearly 40 IEEE members of the Section served as volunteers in the past 15 years.

As Section Chairs served: Goce L. Arsov, L'ubomir Nikoloski, Vlatko Stoilkov and Vladimir Dimcev

IEEE SS Cyril and Methodius University

Up to now there is only one student branch within the Republic of Macedonia Section established at the SS Cyril and Methodius University. The Section itself supports all activities of the student branch. The student branch is very active organizing the different kind of activities (seminars, workshops, membership development presentations, student competitions etc) (Fig. 12). Our students participated to Student branch congresses several times. Three teams took participation at IEEEXtreeme 2010 and 2011 and were clasified very high. One of the main events organized by the Student Branch is the international student competition and workshop ROBOMAC. The first ROBOMAC was organised in cooperation with the student organization BEST and the ROBOMAC 2010 and 2012 (Fig.13) in cooperation with the student organization EESTEC.
