In 1884, Herman Hollerith filed his first U.S. patent related to punch-card equipment. Two years later, the Baltimore Department of Health gave Hollerith's punched-card system for recording and processing data its first practical test. Hollerith's punch-card system was used to tabulate the census of 1890.
