The purpose of ‘cooperative engagement capability’ was to allow an Aegis ship to engage a ‘pop-up’ or sea skimming anti-surface missile while it was still below the ship’s radar horizon. In the original CEC experiments a P-3 ASW airplane equipped with radar of fire control accuracy passed the pop-up missile coordinates to the Aegis ship which was able to engage the ‘attacking’ missile without ever ‘seeing’ it. The original experiments were code named ‘Mountain Top.’ U.S. Navy diagram
