Biography

Hardware security is essential in modern electronics and a foundation for a secure and private world. Ingrid Verbauwhede demonstrated that true security in computing systems requires hardware considerations and hardware solutions. She pioneered efficient realizations of many generations of cryptographic algorithms, including DES, AES, ECC, now used in virtually all electronic devices and communications. Hardware security also includes providing other roots of trust for secure systems, such as true random number generators or secure storage for keys. She pioneered circuit level techniques to protect against side-channel attacks. Verbauwhede now focuses on post-quantum and homo-morphic encryption, which provide security even when quantum computers are used in cryptanalysis.

Verbauwhede is an IEEE and IACR fellow, and professor at the KU Leuven in Leuven, Belgium.
