USS Hornet under attack during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. The Aichi D3A1 dive bomber headed straight down has been hit and will bounce off the smoke stack onto the flight deck. A Nakajima B5N2 torpedo flying over the carrier has just dropped its torpedo, and the balck puff is an exploding AA projectile. The splashes in the foreground are from shell fragments.
